Preserving Chinese Residential Culture in the Age of Urbanization Traditional Chinese Residential Culture: A Crisis of Preservation in the Age of Urbanization
In the wave of rapid urbanization, China's traditional residential culture is facing a crisis of inheritance. Statistics show that China's urbanization rate is rising at an annual rate of 1.2%, with standardized buildings covering 26.1% of the country's territory. However, architectural symbols such as the Lingnan ear-shaped houses and the Huizhou horse-head walls, which carry thousands of years of wisdom, are disappearing. At the same time, the rise in consumer spending has led to a pressing demand for a spiritual home—the smart home market in China is expected to exceed 800 billion yuan in 2024, with high-end customized homes growing by 28%. This reflects the desire of the new generation for "home with warmth." It is particularly noteworthy that overseas Chinese have become an important force in cultural perseverance: a chef in São Paulo uses the art of plant dyeing to preserve memories of his hometown, and a leader in New York rebuilds the Thian Hock Keng Temple with the technique of the Guangfu ancestral hall. Global research has found that overseas Chinese families on average retain 3.2 traditional construction skills, forming a cultural evolution path of "root inheritance - localization - contemporary innovation".
The "World's Chinese Home" project has emerged in response to this era's challenge.
In 2025, Guangzhou Design Week and the Italian-style oriental luxury home customization brand MAG-G have reached a strategic cooperation, jointly launching the global home culture design heritage search program. The project takes "sewing global home culture断层" as its mission and constructs a cultural revitalization engine through three core actions:
Annually select 100 Chinese designers worldwide, commend their design practices that integrate Eastern lifestyle, and establish cross-regional designer communities to promote co-creation.
Selected designers recommend local design masters, deeply exploring the cultural genes and technological innovation in their philosophy.
Organize designers to conduct overseas and domestic research, focusing on "harmony between heaven and man" and "agriculture and learning passed down through generations" as wisdom carriers, and publish annual literature to provide theoretical support for global cultural identity.
The strategic partner MAG-G, carrying the spirit of the East with exquisite craftsmanship. As a high-end mansion full-case customization brand, MAG-G adheres to the concept of "Italian style, ultimate creation," integrating the exquisite Italian craft and the aesthetic connotation of the East, creating a "simple but extraordinary, luxurious but moderate" spiritual residence. Its seven-system full-case product system (covering wardrobes, kitchens, wooden doors, walls, etc.) builds an overall space with both cultural thickness and contemporary style for high-net-worth individuals, perfectly echoing the spiritual upgrade needs of the project "from house to home".
The project aims to awaken the national identity of cultural roots, showcase thousands of "Chinese homes" to the world, and promote the innovative regeneration of traditional wisdom in the contemporary context. The joint venture of Guangzhou Design Week and MAG-G not only represents a cultural search for roots but also endeavors to build a global Chinese home culture community in 2025, allowing the living wisdom of crossing time and space to illuminate the spiritual homeland of modern people.
