30th China International Furniture Expo: Interview with Dong He Su, Founder of GuDao Design 30th China International Furniture Expo: A Glimpse into the Fusion of Tradition and Modernity
The 30th China International Furniture Expo was grandly opened in Shanghai. Among the gathering of global home design power, domestic original design brands stood out. NetEase Home interviewed Dong He Su, the founder of GuDao Design, to hear about how he incorporates the 'memory of the ancient house' into contemporary design, infusing products with more narrative and emotion beyond functionality and aesthetics.
【Dong He Su】We showcased furniture and lighting together, with the theme of "The Memory of the Ancient House," where "ancient house" in Minnan dialect means "old house," referring to my ancestors' home. Grown up by the sea in Cangnan, Wenzhou, my childhood experiences of climbing mountains and going to the sea have沉淀ed into my perception of nature, which has been integrated into my current creation. We combine cross-domain materials with solid wood texture, not chasing trends, but hoping to evoke a pause in time and memory, and to resonate with people.
【Dong He Su】The booth reconstructs the layout of a traditional Wenzhou courtyard. The center of the line is an open-air courtyard (a skywell), where the "crab chair" series is placed. Visitors can freely combine the chairs according to the number of people, sitting around to talk. This setting encourages people to actively participate and interact, spontaneously forming an atmosphere of communication in the space, rather than just passively watching.
【Dong He Su】I am increasingly aware that products not only need to have functionality but also need to have narrative. There are no shortages of goods in the market, but what is lacking is the story and philosophy behind them. In the future, I will pay more attention to transforming personal experiences into design language, allowing users to understand the thinking and logic behind the creation, not just focusing on the product itself.
【Dong He Su】The market and users' aesthetics are always changing. What we need to do is to refine ourselves first, maintain our love for beauty and independent thinking, and then pass this sincerity to the users who recognize our philosophy. Design should be diverse, without a unified standard, but we can still create based on universal aesthetics, so that more people can understand and accept our design.
【Dong He Su】AI is a tool that can improve efficiency and accuracy, but it summarizes the past, while designers create the future. True creativity cannot be replaced, as it originates from human thinking and feelings. Technology should serve people, helping us to better express warmth and emotion, not just pursuing functional stacking.
【Dong He Su】Designers must first have independent values and thinking abilities, followed by cross-disciplinary innovation in their professional field. Design has no boundaries, and we should continue to learn and expand into new fields; at the same time, we must maintain empathy, think from the perspective of users, and make design truly integrate into life and improve experience. Ultimately, all design should return to people, to the real life scenarios.
From the "memory of the ancient house" to the " courtyard" booth concept, Dong He Su leads GuDao Design to always strive to integrate Eastern aesthetics with modern functionality, seeking a balance between narrative and experience. In his view, design is not only about shape and function, but also about emotion and memory. Only by returning to the essence of life and focusing on the real needs of people can we create good designs that stand the test of time. This is also the confidence and core of the original design in China as it moves towards a broader stage.
